Montrose Bird Sanctuary wasn’t always this local hot spot for bird watching. Before it grew towards a protected status, it was just a random patch of land with some overgrown bushes taking over fencing around the place in the 1930’s Chicagoscape. These overgrown bushes became a total hotspot for migrating songbirds over time. Suddenly, birders from all over started flocking to this “Magic Hedge” to catch a glimpse of rare species congregating in the mess of foliage growing onto the unattended to fence.
It wasn’t until the 1990’s that people realized how beautiful this place could be and declared it protected land here in Chicago. They planted more bird-friendly plants, added trails, and even made it more accessible for everyone. With wheelchair accessibility in mind, this parks design is truly invaluable to those in said demographic. In a city that often neglects wheelchair user accessibility in public spaces and rampantly ignores ADA building requirements for accessibility; this park is a step forward for those wheelchair users who enjoy the outdoors in Chicago. As well as anyone with mobility difficulty. All pathways are level and flat. All inclines are staggered to avoid inaccessible angles.
Nowadays, Montrose Bird Sanctuary is officially deemed a nature reserve for the endless different species of birds who call it home throughout the year. I’m here about 5-10 times a year doing engagement sessions for my clients wanting that skyline. This session was shot entirely on a 24mm lens after leaving my 50mm lens at home for the day to challenge myself. My composition on these makes me proud, and their authenticity combined with their chemistry resulted in some light heart vibes for the session. They were thrilled with these and couldn’t stop gushing about how comfortable I was able to make them feel.

Nothing could have prepared me for this one. I knew Susan and Micah were a bit different from the rest of our clients from this year but I never knew how intricate they would get with their macabre theme. This wedding is filled with antique skulls, pies of all varieties, a Klingon wedding AND a […]
This venue was one of the coolest rooms I’ve ever been in. The floor was paneled with glass lit from underneath. The room was shaped circular and created this intimate feeling amongst the guests. And the view from the ceremony was just stunning. What a beautiful day! Enjoy!
We had a lazy Sunday afternoon together in their apartment. It was filled with great artwork, books, motivational sayings, and my favorite—plants! All over. It was glorious as a plant parent myself. They snuggled by the fireplace and made jokes at each other while I snapped away. It was a blast if you ask me. […]
